Cost: Hukoomi lists these Ministry of Interior renewal fees: QR1,000 for employees sponsored by companies, institutions and shops; QR500 for a wife, children and family sponsorships; QR300 for personal sponsorships, domestic workers, farmers and sailors. A 20% discount applies to 3-year renewals for personal, company and family sponsorships. Delivery by Qatar Post costs an extra QR20. The final amount is shown before you pay.
Who this is for
This is for expatriates living in Qatar whose residence permit is close to expiry or has expired. The renewal is submitted by the sponsor: your employer if you work for a company, or the head of the family for a spouse and children. It does not cover getting your first residence permit, changing employer, or permanent residency.
Before you start
- The Qatar ID number of each person to be renewed.
- Access for the sponsor to the Ministry of Interior e-services portal or a registered Metrash account.
- A payment card to pay the fees online.
- For a paper application: the completed form plus a copy of the sponsor's valid Qatar ID (personal sponsorship) or valid establishment ID card (companies and other entities).
- A valid passport. Check its expiry date before you start.
Steps
-
Check the dates
You can renew up to 3 months before the residence permit expires. Starting early helps you avoid late fines.
-
Choose how to apply
The sponsor can renew online on the Ministry of Interior e-services portal, in the Metrash app, or with a paper form at the Expatriates Affairs Department. If you work for a company, your employer normally does this for you.
-
Renew online on the MOI portal
Log in, open "Residency" and choose "Renew Residency". Select the ID numbers to renew (up to 5 at once for individuals, up to 20 for companies), choose the renewal period and the delivery option.
-
Or renew in the Metrash app
Log in to Metrash with your Qatar ID number and password. Open "Residency", then "Residency Renewal". Add the ID numbers, choose personal or company, review the names and continue.
-
Pay the fees
Pay by card. A receipt appears once the payment goes through. Keep it until the new card arrives.
-
If the system blocks the renewal
The portal shows the reason in the "Status" field. Some cases need approval from the Expatriates Affairs Department, for example because of age or a restricted period. These can be submitted for review through Metrash.
-
Receive the new card
The new Qatar ID is delivered by Qatar Post. Check that all details are correct when it arrives.

Renew a residence permit (Hukoomi)Good to know
- A residence permit can be renewed for 1 to 3 years at a time.
- The Ministry of Interior says an expired residence permit must be renewed within 90 days. After that, a fine of QR10 per day applies, up to QR6,000.
- If your employer handles your renewal, ask them a few weeks before expiry to confirm it has been submitted.
- You can follow up on a renewal online using the personal ID number of the sponsor or of the permit holder.
- Renew your passport first if it is about to expire, since passport problems are a common reason a renewal needs extra approval.
